Grand Charity Auction sets new record!

The Grand Charity Auction, organised by Lechlade and District Lions and held at Hatherop Castle School, Hatherop, on 7th February was a major success.

The venue was packed and well-known auctioneer, Philip Allwood of Moore Allen and Innocent, managed, amused and cajoled the rapt audience to much laughter and massive generosity.

The lots, all donated by local businesses and residents, were hotly contested - with highest amounts bid for week-long holidays in Cornwall and the Lake District.

But there was strong competition for the experience days (wing-walking, glider-flying, Land Rover driving), meals out, cases of wine, art and memorabilia.

Lions President Alick Kitchin welcomed the audience, thanked the school and Philip for generously donating their time, and emphasised that all proceeds would go to people in need, especially to the main beneficiary Gloucestershire Young Carers.

Toni Collier, from Gloucestershire Young Carers, spoke movingly of the needs of the 1,000 young people looking after disabled parents or siblings in the county whom her charity supports, who benefit so much from respite and mentoring.

Lead Lions organiser, Christine Sheldon, said: -

“A huge thank you to all who supported this event. It was hard work to make it all happen - but so rewarding when people have a good time and give so generously. Events like this make a difference to people's lives."

The auction raised just over £8,000 in two hours of frantic bidding - more money for good causes than any previous Lions auction or event in the Lions calendar of fundraising activities. As the main beneficiary, Gloucestershire Young Carers received £5000 with the remaining £3000 going to other local causes that we support.
